QUETTA, Feb 18: Twelve people were killed and six others injured when a 20-wheel trailer veered off the road and fell on one side crushing a passenger wagon, at Khojak Pass, some 100km north of here, late on Tuesday evening.

“We brought 12 bodies to Civil Hospital Chaman from the Khojak Pass until late in the night,” Abdul Ghani, in charge Edhi Centre, Chaman, told Dawn by phone. He said six others were injured and six were not.

“An infant, whose mother died in the accident, was missing,” Edhi Centre sources said.

A Afghan commander, a woman, three children and driver of the wagon were among the dead, sources said.

According to sources the Quetta-bound wagon carrying 24 passengers was coming from Spin Buldak. When it reached Khojak Pass, some 30kms from Chaman, a trailer coming from the opposite direction fell on it killing 12 passengers on the spot.

Of the six injured, three are said to be in critical condition.

Seven out the 12 victims were identified as Majeed (driver), Sadiqullah, Hafizullah, Jalaluddin, Noor Mohammad, Ahmed Wali and Major Mohammad Naeem (Afghan commander).

The driver of the long truck has been taken into custody.
