BAHAWALPUR, Feb 18: Transporters have enhanced fares unilaterally after the recent increase in petrol prices, hitting the common man hard.
With the abandoning of cycle-rickshaws in the city, the auto-rickshaw drivers demand high fares on the plea that petrol prices are being increased after every fortnight. The general public are on the mercy of auto-rickshaw drivers who dictate their terms as the number of tongas has also decreased.
The buses, wagons and AC coaches on inter-city routes are also overcharging from passengers, but the district transport authority and the traffic police seem unmoved.
BURIED ALIVE: Two labourers were buried alive on Monday when the wall of an under-construction well collapsed on them near Khanpur.
The bodies of Nadeem and Liaquat were recovered after the hectic efforts of 14 hours as the rain hampered the relief operation. However, two other labourers were rescued by the area people.
LIVESTOCK: The government is taking steps in increasing the livestock wealth to provide cheap mutton, beef and milk to the people.
This was stated by Punjab Minister for Livestock and Dairy Development Syed Harun Ahmed Sultan while talking to newsmen here on Tuesday.
The minister said that special incentives, including loan upto Rs100,000, would be provided to each landlord for the breeding and nourishment of animals especially cows, goats and sheep.
A special package would also be announced for the Cholistani people for breeding the superior quality animals, he said.
The government, he said, had started a drive to create awareness among the people for breeding animals.
For the protection of animals from various diseases in the Bahawalpur district, some 105 mobile teams were working to administer vaccine to animals, he added.
RESULTS: The Islamia University on Tuesday declared the results of BHMS first year annual examinations, 2002.
Only seven out of 121 candidates appeared in the examination were declared successful, showing a pass percentage of 5.78.
