DCOs empowered to grant arms licences

GUJRANWALA, Nov 27: The Punjab government has given executive powers of granting and transferring arms licences to all district coordination officers.

People had been facing problems in connection with getting and renewing their arms licenses since the introduction of the district government system.

Meanwhile, the Gujranwala DCO has inducted assistant district officer Khawar Hafiz for the purpose.

SUSPENDED: The tehsil Nazim on Tuesday suspended from service a food inspector on corruption charges and issued him a show-cause notice.

Shopkeepers and the business community had complained to tehsil city Nazim that food inspector Majid Babar of the tehsil city council was extorting money from them on one pretext or the other. The Nazim, following a preliminary inquiry, suspended the inspector from service.

DEATH SENTENCES: An additional district and sessions judge awarded death sentence with a fine of Rs50,000 to Shahid Iqbal in a murder case here on Tuesday.

The court also awarded him three-year imprisonment with a fine of Rs15,000 under another offence.

According to the prosecution, the convict had killed his cousin, Rukhsana Bibi, and injured her mother and brother over a land dispute in Kotli village, Macharanwali, on Oct 12, 1999.

LOOTED: Dacoits in uniform looted a house and injured the family members during a dacoity bid in Saidnagar, Alipur Chattha, here on Tuesday.

Nine armed men forced their entry into the house of Mubashar and tied the inmates with ropes. They collected Rs87,000 in cash, jewellery, electronic goods and other valuables. They also beat up the house owner, his brother, Taimoor, and children on resistance and escaped.

In another incident, three highwaymen looted a coaster on the national highway and shot at and injured two passengers.

A coaster was on its way to Lahore from Sialkot. Near the Upper Chenab canal bridge on the GT Road, it was stopped by three dacoits who snatched cash, jewellery and wristwatches from commuters and fled.

DIES AT MAYO: A woman who was stabbed and injured by her nephews in Satellite Town died in the Mayo Hospital, Lahore, on Tuesday.

DACOITS HELD: Garjakh police claimed on Tuesday having arrested six dacoits.

Those arrested are Shahbaz Ahmad, Saeed, Nawaz, Rahmat Ali, Fiaz Ahmad and Riasat Ali.

SHOT DEAD: A motorcycle-rickshaw driver, Ghulam Abbas, was shot dead by unidentified killer(s) in Thata Faqirullah village, Wazirabad, on Tuesday.
