LAHORE, Feb 15: District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood has said that the City District Govern-ment had not so far dropped the plan for the devolution of the solid waste management.

He was speaking at a press conference about the ‘outstanding’ performance of SWM on Eidul Azha, here on Saturday.

The decision would be implemented, he said when asked about the implementation of the Lahore District Council decision taken in the budget session last year in respect of the solid waste management devolution to the union council level.

Mian Amer said that the SWM had successfully managed over 900 tons of waste generated during the Eid days by pressing all its 231 vehicles and over 6,500 sanitary workers into service.

Against 210 pickups hired for solid waste disposal on the last Eidul Azha, the SWM hired only 150 vehicles this year, lifted and disposed of the entire waste successfully.

The SWM had not only managed the solid waste within the city but in Kahna, Raiwind and Chuhng as well this year for the first time in its history. The SWM officers, supervisory staff and sanitary workers remained on duty during the Eid holidays. Over 700,000 animals were sacrificed in the city district this year.

“On the average, a SWM sanitary worker is handling 0.56 tons of solid waste daily against 0.42 tons handled by a sanitary worker in Karachi. A sanitary worker in the Indian city of Ahmadabad handled only 0.18 tons of solid waste in a day.”
