SRINAGAR, Feb 9: India on Saturday released on parole All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani due to his failing health, officials said on Sunday.

Mr Geelani, 73, arrested last June under the anti-terrorism law for allegedly funding militant groups, was released on Saturday evening, a senior official in occupied Kashmir told Reuters.

The leader, who has denied the charge, is being treated in a hospital in Mumbai for what family members said was a suspected cancerous cyst on his liver.

A New Delhi court this month freed Mr Geelani’s journalist son-in-law, Iftikar Gilani, after prosecutors dropped charges that he was in possession of secret military documents.
