SRINAGAR, Feb 6: Police in occupied Kashmir on Thursday broke up a protest with teargas and arrested two Hurriyat leaders who were demanding that the remains of a hanged freedom fighter be handed over for burial.

Yasin Malik, chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), and his deputy, Javed Mir, led several hundred supporters chanting pro-freedom slogans on a march through Srinagar.

The two leaders were pressing the authorities to hand over the remains of JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged in New Delhi’s Tihar jail on Feb 11, 1984, and buried inside the jail.—AFP
