PESHAWAR, Feb 2: The wheel-jam strike by the transporters of the city continued for the second consecutive day, and the commuters faced hardships in reaching their destinations on Sunday.

The strike call was given by the transporters of the city demanding fare raise, which the district government had declined to accept.

Though the strike on the second day was partial but owing to the scarcity of vehicles the commuters faced difficulties.

The transporter leaders had remained in touch with the district Nazim and officials of the provincial transport authority over the issue of raising the fares, but refusal to allow an increase instigated them to announce wheel-jam strike for an indefinite period from Saturday.

Some of the transporters, who defied the strike call argued that the so-called leaders had been using them for their vested interests.

Pickup owners had a field day on Sunday and incidents of high charges were reported. At some places the commuters complained to the police but in vain.

As the leaders had warned, those defying the strike, of action therefore, the vehicles remained plying between Karkhano market and Hashtnagri.

Meanwhile, the transporters association expressing concern over the lukewarm response from the government had warned to begin a province-wide strike if their demand was not accepted by Monday.
