Akbar, Gulam grab crowns

KARACHI, Feb 1: Giant-killer Akbar Pataudi grabbed the Under-18 final when overcame the loss of first set to tame Nasir Mushtaq in the final of Westbury Open tennis championship on Saturday.

Akbar lost the first 2-6 but bounced back with vengeance to clinch the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 for the crown.

Not to be content with his Under-18 exploits Akbar is on line for main prize when he tackles Jalil Khan in the final of men’s single on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Akbar gunned down seeded Ahmed Hussain in marathon three-set on Friday to reach the final. The score was 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.

Earlier Gulam Abbas outclassed Nasir Mushtaq 6-2, 6-3 to capture under-17 title. Nasir failed to cope with Gulam’s all-round court craft and never threatened in both the sets.

Gul Hameed and Dr. Aftab lifted the senior 45 doubles trophy beating Saima Khan and Shujaul Haq Pasha in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
