JHANG, Jan 31: Additional district and sessions judge Chaudhry Jamil Ahmad on Friday handed down 14 years hard jail to an inspector for killing a youth in a staged encounter some three years ago.

The judge acquitted former Jhang additional SP Sultan Azam Taimuri by giving him the benefit of the doubt. No judgment, however, was announced against another co-accused and absconding inspector Saeed Anwar Baoch.

Javed Jogara of Jogara village was killed in the encounter by a Jhang Saddar police party led by additional SP Sultan Azam Taimuri and consisted of two inspectors.

Subsequently in a judicial inquiry, relatives of the deceased challenged the police version and contended that Javed was murdered by the police after being taken into custody. A murder case was registered against the police party after the findings of the inquiry. The heirs filed a private complaint in court against three main accused police officers which announced the decision after a lengthy trial. — Correspondent
