PESHAWAR: At least four rockets, fired from an unknown location in the direction of Peshawar's Bacha Khan international airport, landed on Canal Road on Monday, close to the runway of the provincial capital’s main air strip.

One of the four rockets landed into a canal close to the house of popular Pakistani cricketer Umar Gul, however, no causality was reported.

Local police said one of the other projectiles fell into a house, another inside a graveyard, while the fourth landed in the open fields.

It was unclear who fired the rockets, or what the apparent target was, although local police suspected the airport to be the target of the attack, with most of the rockets falling yard from the airports’ vicinity.

No loss of life was reported by the police, but locals said a minor girl was injured in the attack.

The Bacha Khan Airport has been a target for militant attacks in the past as well.

On Dec 15, 2012, the military side of the same airport came under an audacious suicide and rocket attack by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan militants, resulting in the killing of seven people, including five militants, and injuries to 40 others.

Monday’s rocket attack comes a day after Pakistani military commandos launched a major operation against militants in Khyber agency’s strategic Tirah valley region, said to have recently been occupied by TTP militants.
