SUKKUR, Jan 28: The acting district Nazim, Sukkur, Iqbal Dawood, taking serious notice of the large-scale misappropriation of funds in the Public School, Sukkur, asked the authorities concerned for carrying out a detailed scrutiny of the records and complete audit of the school accounts for the last five years.

Iqbal Dawood sent a letter to the EDO, Revenue, Mohammad Hasan Syed, on Tuesday directing him for carrying out a complete audit of the school and if needed to appoint private auditors for the job.

Mr Syed appointed Shaukat Shaikh, DO, Finance, to audit the school’s accounts and submit a report within 15 days.

Reliable sources told this correspondent that some senior teachers of the school had complained to the district Nazim that at least Rs30 million had been embezzled during the last five years.

COMPENSATED: The heirs of a murdered journalist, Shahid Soomro, were compensated by the father of the accused in a Jirga at Kandhkot, Jacobabad District, on Tuesday.

The journalist, a father of five children including three daughters, had been gunned down outside his house last October.

Wahid Ali, son of Sardar Sher Mohammad Khan Bijarani, chieftain of the Bijarani tribe, and others had been nominated in an FIR.

The case is pending before the ATC and the High Court, Sukkur Bench.

The Jirga was presided over by Sardar Sunder Khan Sundrani. He announced a compensation of Rs1.65 million to be paid as compensation to Shahid’s widow and children.

CONDEMNED: The general secretary (Sindh), Asif Ali Zardari Release Committee, Najeeb-ur-Rehman Domki, condemned the statement of Mumtaz Ali Bhutto, chairman, Sindh National Front, regarding Mr Zardari not having the right to receive condolence on the death of Shireen A. Begum, wife of the late Z. A. Bhutto.

He said on Tuesday that it is a fact that Asif Ali Zardari is a part of the Bhutto family as he is husband of Benazir Bhutto and son-in-law of Shireen A. Begum.

FOUR SENTENCED: The judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court, Sukkur, Naimatullah Phulpoto, sentenced four accused — Abdul Wahid, Ahmed Nawaz, Khawand Bux, and Gul Hasan — to a 27-year RI and a fine of Rs145,000.

In default of paying fine, they will have to undergo another four years of RI.

All those convicted are Marhetto Bugtis by caste.

WOMAN KILLED: A woman, Mehar Khatoon, 43, wife of Haji Bashir Ahmed, was shot dead in the Peer Mangnio village the other day.

Three men — Haji Ghulam Hussain Bhutto, Nisar Ahmed, and Inayat Bhutto — were booked on murder charges.

PROTEST: Golo tribesmen held a sit-in in Zorgarh, near Kandhkot, on Saturday against the police for not recovering kidnapped tribesmen.

The DIG, Operations, Syed Mushtaq Shah, and the DPO, Jacobabad, assured them that the hostages would be recovered within 72 hours.

The chief of the Golo tribe, Sardar Mohammad Saleh Khan, while addressing his tribesmen alleged that certain police officials were involved with the outlaws and had miserably failed to provide protection to the people of the area.
