GILGIT, March 13: The Gilgit-Baltistan government on Wednesday beefed up security in the region in general and in the Gilgit city in particular following reports of possible sabotage attempts.

The entry and exit points of the region as well as of the Gilgit city were kept under strict surveillance and every vehicle was being searched.

“We have some tip-off that terror acts may take place in the area that is why all security has been put on high alert,” said an administration official.

Emergency 1122 ambulances have also been parked in the heart of the city to deal with any emergency. Movement of tractors, trucks and water tankers is being monitored. Several pickets have been set up where search of vehicles as well as passengers is going on.

The administration has also banned movement of oil tankers in the city and all parking points are being watched by the intelligence and plainclothes men.

The security in and around bas stands, airport, jails and mosques has also been heightened.

Sources said the home department took security measures in the wake of the instructions from the federal interior ministry that region faced threats of terrorism.
