LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said a caretaker set-up should immediately be announced, adding that stalling on the matter could lead to damaging the democratic process underway in the country, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives in Lahore, Sharif said his party had completed its "homework" on the matter of the caretaker prime minister, adding that the government should also move forward on the issue.

The PML-N chief the sooner the question of the caretaker set-up is resolved the better it would be.

In January, a delegation of the PML-N had met with leaders of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) to discuss the caretaker set-up, whereas, last week, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, chief of the Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q) had met with Tehrik-i-Minhajul Quran (TMQ) chief, Tahirul Qadri, and discussed the formation of the interim setup in the run-up to the general elections.

Also on Tuesday, speaking on Qadri’s demand for the reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Sharif said the TMQ chief’s agenda was to sabotage the upcoming general elections.

He said countless Pakistanis held dual nationalities but they had not been making demands of this nature.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing a petition filed by the TMQ chief requesting the court to declare the appointments of the chief election commissioner and the other four members of the ECP void ab initio.

Answering a question on the hanging of Afzal Guru over a botched attack on the Indian parliament in Dec 2001, the PML-N chief said India would have to act responsibly if it wanted improved ties with Pakistan.
