LAHORE, Feb 6: The intense westerly system that disrupted life in the country for three days finally moved over to China on Wednesday leaving behind recharged rivers and enough snow for summer irrigation.
“Weather now is calm everywhere in the country as the intense westerly system has moved away. However its cold front (wind) that follows every system will rule the country for some more days and keep temperatures low as a result,” said Flood Forecasting Division Chief Riaz Khan.
Before moving away the system nevertheless generated some more rain and snowfall over upper parts of the country. And the Met department expected isolated light rain and snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir in the next 24 hours because of the remnants of the system.
According to Mr Khan, the system was unique because it recharged the dead rivers at this time of the winter, and covered the hills with thick sheet of snow that would fill dams for irrigation and electricity generation in the coming summer.
The peak inflow of Mangla on Wednesday was 140,000 cusecs which was unprecedented. The highest inflow of Tarbela was 54,000 cusecs and of the river Chenab 80,000 cusecs.
The Met office said Peshawar received another 45mm of rain on Wednesday. Murree received 30mm, Dera Ismail Khan and Mianwali 24mm each, Bhakkar 20mm, Garhi Dupatta and Noorpur Thal 18mm each, Islamabad Airport 17mm, Risalpur and Dir 15mm each, Joharabad 9mm, Parachinar and Rawlakot 8mm each, Lower Dir 6mm, Saidu Sharif and Cherat 5mm each, Mangla 4mm and Drosh 3mm.
It said winter would intensify in the upper and central parts of the country in the next few days. The night temperature of the upper parts was likely to further drop by four to six degrees C.
The lowest minimum temperature in Parachinar was -12 degrees Celsius. It was -9 in Skardu and -8 in Astore.
Meanwhile, people in the plains of the country witnessed reinvigorating clear sunshine after three days, improving the day temperature to some extent.
In Lahore, people enjoyed the sunshine which improved the day temperature to 19 degrees Celsius. The night temperature nevertheless was three degrees Celsius under the impact of the westerly system.
The Met office forecast more sunny days in the plains, saying this would help people cope with the expected cold nights.
