SHEIKHUPURA, Jan 17: The local police busted two gangs of vehicle lifters comprising 10 members and recovered four stolen cars from their possession.

This was claimed by District Police Officer Maruk Athar while talking to newsmen here on Friday.

He said the police were making efforts to recover the remaining 26 stolen cars.

After an alarming increase in the car-snatching incidents, a police squad headed by SP (investigation) Mirza Maqbool and CIA DSP Malik Imtiaz was formed, he said. The police party conducted the raid in a nearby Bharianwala village, some 10 kms from here, and arrested the outlaws.

Iftikhar alias Achhu and Ilyas Dogar were the ring leaders of the two gangs. Their arrested accomplices included Arshad, Fida Abbas, Kibria, Mubashir, Shafi Khan and Shahbaz. Some 17 cars were either stolen or hijacked in the Sheikhupura district while others in different parts of the province by the culprits, he said.

During preliminary investigation, they also confessed to have stolen or hijacked dozens of motorcycles, the DPO added.

Further investigation is under way.

LOOTED: An expatriate woman on Friday was deprived of 2,500 sterling ponds, 25 tolas of gold, Rs5,000 in cash and valuables near Faizpur Khurd on the Jaranwala Road.

Zeenat Bano was on her way from Lahore by a taxi cab. Near Faizpur Khurd, the driver abruptly applied the brakes as if his vehicle got punctured. As the woman came out of the vehicle for inspection, the driver took the opportunity and sped away with her belongings.

A case has been registered against the accused.
