KARACHI, Jan 21: Renowned singer Mehnaz Begum, who passed away on Jan 19 in Bahrain while she was on her way to the United States for treatment, was buried in the Wadi-i-Hussain graveyard on Monday after Zohrain prayers.

Her funeral prayers were held at Imam Bargah Shuhada-i-Karabala, Incholi.

Talking to Dawn, the singer’s cousin Huma said Mehnaz Begum was an extraordinary person who always cared for members of her family. She lamented that ever since the news of her death broke no government official got in touch with the family to extend their condolences.

She, however, praised the media for giving due coverage to Mehnaz Begum’s funeral. “Only the media paid her the kind of attention she deserved,” she said.

The absence of big showbiz personalities from Mehnaz’s funeral was conspicuous. There were artists such as singer Asif Mehdi (son of Mehdi Hasan) and musician Buland Iqbal, but people representing the singer’s fraternity were not in big numbers.

Soyem will be held on Thursday at Masjid-i-Babul Ilm near the Five-Star traffic intersection at 3pm.
