ISLAMABAD, Jan 16: Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) on Thursday warned that it was monitoring the performance of all public and private medical/dental education colleges.

In a statement, a spokesman of the council said it was the only body mandated to maintain minimum standards of medical/dental education throughout the country and make regulations under PM&DC Ordinance 1962.

These regulations were mandatory for every medical and dental institution to follow to get recognition/registration by the council.

The spokesman said the council had framed its regulations under the ordinance adding that the status of these medical/dental colleges was determined by the council after a thorough inspection.

The council clarified that an unrecognised medical college had challenged its powers to recognise the medical colleges in the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench, which had allowed the council to exercise its powers for regulation of medical and dental education.

The spokesman claimed that the said medical college misinterpreted few lines of the decision and published misleading statements in the newspapers to misguide the parents and the intending students regarding the powers of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Counci.

He said the PM&DC later filed an intra-court appeal with the high court to clarify the judgment, which was being wrongly interpreted.
