KARACHI, Jan 16: A division bench of the High Court of Sindh issued notices on Thursday to the respondents and deputy attorney-general on a petition filed by MPA Abdul Rahman Rajput of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal challenging the election of the deputy speaker of the Sindh assembly.

The bench comprised Justice Mohammed Roshan Essani and Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali.

The petitioner challenged the election of Ms Rahila Tiwana as deputy speaker of the Sindh assembly.

Citing the Sindh governor, Jalal Mehmood Shah, presiding officer of the assembly session in which the impugned election was held, Ms Rahila Tiwana and other candidates who contested for the post, the petitioner maintains that he filed his nomination papers within the stipulated time, but all the other candidates, including Ms Tiwana, failed to file their nominations within the specified time. They filed their nomination papers after the time limit was extended by the Sindh governor through a special notification, which was an exercise beyond the law, he contends.

When the matter came up for hearing, the court, after hearing initial arguments by counsel for the petitioner, issued notices to the respondents and DAG for a date to be fixed by the office of the court later.

The same bench also issued notices to the chairman and the managing director of the Karachi Fish Harbour Authority for Jan 29 on a petition filed by Khan Mir and three others, who have different businesses at the fish harbour.

The petitioners who are launch-owners, mole holder, ice dealer and fish auctioneers moved the court against exorbitant charges for issuance of identity cards, token for operation of vehicles carrying fish, etc.

The same bench also issued notices to the TPO Keamari Town and the SHO Jackson on a petition filed by Mohammed Ghaus.

The petitioner moved the court seeking a direction to the respondents for removing his photograph and other details from the board showing list of “history sheeters.”

The petitioner maintained that some 25 years back when he was 25 years old he was implicated in a case and was sentenced to six months in prison. After that he was not involved in any criminal case till today, but still his name and photograph appeared on the board showing names of history sheeters.

After hearing counsel for the petitioner, the court issued notices to the respondents for Jan 30.accused remanded: Justice Shabbir Ahmed of the High Court of Sindh, who is also the administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts at Karachi, remanded on Thursday accused Rizwan Ahmed alias Bashir in the custody of police till Jan 25.
