I AM sure many of your older readers must have read John Steinbeck’s novel The Winter of Our Discontent. I have a feeling that with rampant corruption, breakdown of state control, unchecked terrorism, spiralling cost of living, gas shortages, power breakdowns and impending long marches, this just might prove to be the winter of discontent for Pakistanis.
A quotation from this classic book amply illustrates our current situation and the mindset of our leaders: “I guess I am trying to say, grab anything that goes by. It may not come around again.”
