ISLAMABAD, Jan 12: A lawyer, Dr Syed Mohammad Anwar won the elections of district bar association of Islamabad on Saturday, with the support of pro-government and other like-minded lawyers.

Dr Anwar bagged 619 votes while his opponent, an activist of restoration of judges movement, Zahid Mehmood Raja, got 562 votes.

For the position of vice-president, Shaista Tabassum secured 626 votes against Jam Khursheed who obtained 535 votes.

Qamar Inayat Raja, a candidate for general secretary, won by bagging 763 votes against Tariq Saroya who polled 408 votes.

Shajar Abbas was elected joint secretary after taking 692 votes against his opponent, Rana Bilal Anwar, who secured 307. Basharat Hussain has been elected finance secretary with 705 votes.

As many as 1,228 lawyers out of 1,951 cast their votes.

In Rawalpindi both the presidential candidates of district bar - Malik Israrul Haq and Basharatullah Khan - were activists of judges restoration movement.

Malik Israr, however, defeated Khan with a margin of about 500 votes. He bagged 1,015 votes while his opponent, Basharatullah Khan, got 542 votes.

The other winning candidates of Rawalpindi bar were M. Masroof Chaudhry who was elected vice president after bagging 613 votes. His rival, Javaid Iqbal Malik, secured 475 votes. Raja Azkar obtained 415 votes.

Malik Zaheer Arshad, general secretary, obtained 790 votes while other two candidates for the same slot Aslaq Awan, got 220 votes and Sajid Yousaf Mirza secured 546.

Javeria Ambreen Qureshi after a tough competition was elected joint secretary after getting 780 votes. Her opponent Raja Nusrat Mehmood obtained 764 votes.

Advocate Farzana was elected unopposed for the position of library secretary.

Total voters of district bar association Rawalpindi were 2,417 but 1,756 cast their votes.

Similarly the annual elections for District Bar Association (DBA), Attock were also held.

Syed Azmat Ali Bukhari advocate, who is also a local PPP leader, was elected DBA Attock’s president with 211 votes, while his opponent Syed Ahmed Saeed advocate got 51 votes.

Israr Khattak advocate was elected general secretary obtaining 174 votes, while his rival Raja Aftab advocate bagged 86 votes.

On the other hand, Haji Mohammad Bakhtiar Ahmed Khan advocate was elected vice president with 155 votes, defeating Sardar Abdul Rasheed Khan advocate, who received 104 votes.

Moreover, Sajjad Ahmed advocate and Malik Sajjad Ahmed Rafique  were elected for the posts of joint secretary and finance secretary, respectively. Sardar Hamid Ali Khan advocate had already been elected secretary library, unopposed.—A Reporter
