LAHORE, Jan 3: The Punjab Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution against the “conspiracies against democracy being hatched by anti-democratic forces”.

Members from across the divide criticised Dr Tahirul Qadri and said the “so-called champion of Islam” is hatching conspiracies in the name of electoral reforms.

Tabled by PPP’s Zulfiqar Gondal and Shaukat Basra, the resolution said the house condemned attempts to delay general election and impose ‘unrepresentative’ forces on the masses.

It demanded that the Election Commission and the federal government make arrangements to hold the general election in time.

The resolution urged all political forces to unite against the elements which wanted to derail the caravan of democracy and sabotage the polls.

In their speeches, the members criticised Qadri and PTI’s Imran Khan, saying neither “Sheikhul Islam” nor “Khan” would be allowed to sabotage the political system which was real representative of the masses.

They said being a Canadian citizen, Qadri had no right to ridicule the parliament and democracy of Pakistan. Imran was criticised for seeking elimination of women’s reserved seats in assemblies.

Later, proceedings of the house were adjourned till Friday (today) morning.
