LAHORE, Dec 27: The National Accountability Bureau, Punjab, has initiated a probe into ‘fake sales tax refund scam’ to the tune of Rs2.6 billion at the regional offices of Federal Board of Revenue, Lahore.

The decision to take cognisance of the matter was made in the executive board meeting presided over by the NAB Punjab director general.

The NAB said recently a single family withdrew Rs2.6 billion as sales tax refund through 83 fake companies, thus causing huge loss to national exchequer. “We have initiated proceedings against the delinquent officers and beneficiaries, besides digging out other mega cases of sales tax refund and suggested preventive measures to stop the corrupt practices in FBR once and for all,” said a NAB official. — Staff Reporter
