KARACHI, Dec 16: A protest demonstration held by various Shia organisations at the Numaish traffic intersection ended peacefully in the early hours of Sunday after Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad gave assurance regarding the acceptance of their demands.

A delegation comprising Maulana Nazir Abbas of the Shia Ulema Council, Maulana Sadiq Taqvi of the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen and Mohammad Abidi of the Imamia Student Organisation called on the governor and told him of their demands.

A spokesman for the Shia organisations told Dawn that the governor accepted a charter of demands of the delegation after which they decided to end their sit-in. Similarly, he said, the delegation also agreed to withdraw a strike call for Sunday in the interior of Sindh.

A large number of people, including women and children, took part in the sit-in that began on Friday afternoon.

The sit-in was jointly organised by the SUC, MWM, Jafria Alliance, Shia Action Committee, ISO and Jafria Students Organisation in protest against the ongoing targeted killing on sectarian grounds.
