LAHORE, Dec 11: The Government College University has signed a five-year agreement with the National Institute of Lasers and Optronics, Islamabad, (NILOP) to conduct joint research and technological projects.

GCU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Khaleequr Rahman and NILOP Director-General Dr SM Javed Akhtar signed the agreement during a ceremony at the Syndicate Committee Room on Tuesday.

According to the agreement, GCU faculty members and postgraduate students would be able to use the high-tech equipment and other technical and testing facilities at NILOP – working under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission – for research projects. Facilities include laser cooling and trapping, atomic clock, micro-sensors, ultra short pulse laser, optronics etc.

Prof Rahman said modern research was becoming complex and no individual or institution could possess all the required knowledge, equipment, and techniques. He said the deal with NILOP would further strengthen the research activities of GCU Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics, Psychics Department and Chemistry Department.

EXHIBITION: The GCU in collaboration with the Punjab Arts Council organised a ceramics art exhibition at its Minhas Art Gallery. MNA Khurram Dastagir Khan inaugurated the exhibition.

Around 60 artworks of students from various educational institutions, including GCU, LCWU, Kinnaird College, Ayesha Degree College, Government Apwa College and Punjab University’s College of Arts and Design were displayed at the exhibition.

Punjab Arts Council Deputy Director Naeem Ehsan said the artworks were made by students during a workshop organised by the Punjab Arts Council at GCU.

BA (Honours): Kinnaird College Principal Dr Rukhsana David has announced the college will introduce BA (Honours) degree in music in connection with its centennial celebrations next year.

Dr David made this announcement at the inauguration ceremony of the college’s music studio on Wednesday. The new studio includes a separate music room with new sound system and additional instruments.

The principal lauded Ms Ghazala, Ms Sheeba Alam and Ms Mughira Ali for putting efforts to establish the music studio for practice classes.

The ceremony was attended by Dr Nikhat Khan, Abdul Rauf, Bushra Shereen, Shazia Saeed, Dr Sadaf Bukhari, Dr Saleha and other faculty members, besides a number of students.
