LAHORE: Former captain Shahid Afridi was left out of Pakistan’s one-day international squad but kept his place in Twenty20 internationals when Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee announced the teams for the up-coming limited-overs tour of India.
Chief selector Iqbal Qasim revealed the squads in a delayed press conference at PCB’s headquarters at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore on Monday.
The selectors picked three uncapped players who have shown impressive performances in domestic tournaments. These include leg-spinner Zulfiqar Babar – who was the leading wicket-taker (62 in nine matches) in the recently-concluded President’s Trophy – as well as batsman Haris Sohail – who scored 673 runs in five matches in the tournament top-scored in the same tournament and pacer Asad Ali, who topped the wickets tally (15) in the domestic Twenty20 competition that ended on Sunday.
Former captain Younis Khan made a surprise comeback into the ODI squad after having been left out of the team for the series against Australia in August-September. The 35-year-old has only managed 167 runs in his 10 ODI performances this calendar year.
Meanwhile, Afridi, who has taken 35 wickets and scored 408 runs in the 23 ODIs since the World Cup semi-final against India last year, which Pakistan lost in Mohali, was left out of the ODI line-up on the basis of poor form.
Qasim said Afridi would have to “prove his performance in the two T20s if he wants to be considered for future ODIs.”
He said the same applied to veteran all-rounder Razzaq, who starred for champions Lahore Lions in the domestic tournament.
Opener Imran Nazir, all-rounder Yasir Arafat and pacer Mohammad Sami, who were part of Pakistan’s squad at the ICC World T20 in Sri Lanka in October, were dropped while left-arm spinner Raza Hasan and middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq miss out due to injuries.
Seven players were recalled by the selectors on back of recent performances. Umar Amin, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan and Ahmed Shahzad were called in for the T20 squad while Anwar Ali, Wahab Riaz and Imran Farhat are part of the ODI squad.
The announcement for the two 15-member squads comes nearly two weeks before the opening match of the tour, a T20 match in Ahmedabad on December 25, and a day after the final of the domestic Twenty20 cup.
Pakistan will fly to New Delhi on December 22 and play the first Twenty20 match in Bangalore three days later.
The second Twenty20 match will be played in Ahmedabad on December 27 followed by one-day matches in Chennai (December 30), Kolkata (January 3) and Delhi (January 6).

What is the crieteria for selecting Mr. Imran Farhat in the ODI squad? I think Ahmed Shahzad is the best choice in both forms of cricket and he proved his performance too.

Good to see Junaid Khan in both squads. But where is Hammad Azam?? He seemed like a perfect candidate for limited overs cricket, has all the shots, fields well, bowls if needed and has temperament. If only he had an uncle or father-in-law in the board... ;)

Can PCB explain how come Imran Farhat was selected while so many senior players were left out. Did he perform somewhere that we missed?
And they ask Razzaq to prove his performance, when was he given a real chance? even when the poor guy is selected, he is either left out in crucial matches or sent to bat on the last ball.

Wahab Riaz and Umar Gul should have been droped altogather from one day as well t20 for ever.
They are non performers.Too old and too emotional.
What Shoab Malik is doing in t20 ?.He is also a non performer in first class cricket.
Dropping Afridi from one dayer is another big mistake PCB has made.Afridi is not only a great
in batting but also a good bowler and fielder.He hits ball fast and hard.No body in Pakistani team or
for that matter any other inernatioal cricket player can come to his level.

Some absurd selections as was expected from a selection committee which is headed by the most incompetent chief selector after wasim bari.
How come Mr Kamran Akmal retained his place? what wonders has he performed since his comeback, same keeping howlers and a poor batting performance. Why Mr, Iqbal Qasim did not issue warning to him like he did in case of sarfaraz ahmed and shahid afridi. Till when, we would tolerate the keeping blunders by Kamran??? It should be made clear to him that he can ensure his place in team only as a specialist batsman and for that we need consistent performances at the top order
M. Irfan was useless and mediocre whe n he was given the chance in England series, Ehsan adil deserved the chance . Imran farhat, shoaib malik and sohail tanveer are still in team despite repeated failures at international level in recent opportunities. Till when , selectors will continue to ignore the highly talented and technically accomplished player like khurram manzoor who have piled runs in every format of the game. Khurram and Nasir are the opening partnership of the future.The only bright aspects of selection are inclusion of Haris Sohail ( who in my view would form the missing link of future middle order along with azhar ali , umar akmal and asad shafiq)

I agree india is a bigger threat for Pakistani cricket and will be worse when it comes o players. A country saying largest democracy in world...how they treated a blind player of pakistani cricket team just few days ago. Just imagine how Indian media and shrewed so called controllers of cricket world has reacted if this has happened in Pakistan...
On a separate note Afridi is an outstanding performer in all forms of cricket... batsman, bowler and a brilliant fielder, despite Afridi current performance he is a match winning player, team builder and a real fighter....can someone bet on Misbah, Malik or Younas....
It's a shame we won't see Afridi and Razaq either its against India or others....a game without Afridi (thrill) is just like life without fun...

Shoaib Malik is not in the ODI squad who cares if hes in T20 I mean atleast our ODI squad seems decent compared to the one that was facing Australia in Dubai and for T20 im pretty happy with that as well now that Junaid Khan, Ahmed Shahzad and Umar Amin are in it so I think its a pretty good selection for now lets see how it works out and we will go from there.

Pakistan need a wicket keeper and kamran is not Moin Khan. I believe if you want to win in India, relieve Kamran. For Afridi, he can see his paycheck if can face 40 balls as not out. In other words, if he tries he could be in.

Still discrimination against M. Yousef and Sarfaraz Ahmed. Why not Zulqarnan Haider, what was his fault. Pakistan need a wicket keeper and kamran is not Moin Khan. Umer Akmal is a better batsman if Pakistan needs one. Team should be made of genuine/deserving players like: Abdul Razzak, Zulquarnan Haider or Sarfaraz Ahmed (can alternate - both are great keepers), Jamshed, Younus, Mizbah, Shafique (he is only hurt not dead, NB), Hafeez, Ajmal, couple of openers, Ahsan Adil and should use new guys for fast bowling and a good opener Jamshed's caliber.
Board is totally overlooking Asad, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Zulquanan Haider. I believe if you want to win in India, keep Kamran and his clout(s) out, meaning totally relieved from selection interface. I would sign a different contract. He can see his paycheck if can stay and face 40 balls without being out. In other words, he need to improve his batting skills and we know if he tries he could be in.

I feel sorry for Abdur Razzaq. I think he played only one game in world T20 cup before semi final and performed well and then he dropped in semi final. PCB must hire research team to evaluate his performances, number of chances given etc...

Have to say, brave selection by PCB. I hope BCCI takes a leaf out of their book and drop the non-performers who keep getting selected due to past performances. It is beyond me why Razzaq wasn't selected, but overall great to see youngsters getting a chance. I hope India does that too and drop the non-performing oldies and bring in some youth. India vs. Pakistan are always so exciting to watch and I am looking forward to this series!

Shoib Malik is not an international material. Though his record against india is better but he is filling some youngsters spot unnecessarily. He was an ordinary off spin bowler initially who worked on his batting skill but could not achieve it because naturally he was not a batsman and failed on seaming pitches against good bowling attacks.

I agree 100%. Player like Fawad Alam is not selected while he is the best ODI player in a crisis. He won many matches single handedly. He is the Asif Iqbal who was the man for crisis. His avg. is close to 50 in recently concluded domestic series while he is a great fielder and a change bowler.

We Indians love to see Sahid Afridi. Dont drop him. I think two players in world play with their heart one is Sehwag and another is Afridi. May be Afridi not have achieved accolades like Shewag but he is also dangerous like Sehwag and good for cricket.

I don't like ODI selection. Afridi axed, that's fine but we are short of a good all rounder and a good fast pace seam bowler. I am really missing Mohuammed Amir now. Its hard for me to understand, why PCB does not include Abdur Razzak. He is a gem. Why Imran Farhat ? why why why ............. ?

If all it takes for you to be from PUNJAB,then i have a couple of JAMADARS(Bhangii's) that are available,they can probably do a better job then these BASTAR*S.
