LAHORE, Dec 7: Governor Sardar Latif Khosa has proposed another amendment to the Constitution to give ‘some powers’ to the representatives of the federation in the provinces so that they can check wrongdoings.
“I have prepared a report of the Punjab government’s rigging in this week’s by-poll for the president and prime minister. I will also propose bringing another amendment to the constitution empowering the governors so that they could act and stop rigging in the elections and other wrongdoings of the provincial governments,” Mr Khosa said.
Talking to Dawn here on Friday, the governor said had he some powers he would have deployed rangers and directed the IGP to act and stop rigging in the by-poll.
“On the polling day, Dec 4, the PPP workers asked me to do something to stop the rigging. I told them that I did not have powers after the passage of the 18th Amendment,” he said, adding senior PPP leader Raza Rabbani was his leader and friend and his comments about him were reported out of context.
Mr Khosa said if the elections were rigged how true representatives of the people could be elected.
“I am a strong advocate of supremacy of parliament but at the same time there is a need to empower the federation so that it can have some checks and balances over what the provincial governments are doing,” he said.
