IN [Lahore], there exist no adequate arrangements for the upkeep of archaeological sites…. It is [questioned] that since the government has not enough resources to meet day-to-day expenditures …will it be wise to spend on archaeological sites … The stance is nothing but a lame excuse…. A large number of local and foreign tourists visit these places. At certain sites, the visitors have to buy tickets. In addition, huge grants are given … by several international organisations for (the upkeep of) historical sites.

…The provision of facilities at historical places on a permanent basis is imperative. A recent meeting presided over by the Lahore commissioner was informed that the chief minister had taken serious note of the fact that the parking of vehicles near the Fort had aggravated problems. The chief minister directed that the parking lot should be shifted to the Guddi Ground and the present place converted into a park.

The meeting was informed that within 10 days or so, an [overhead pedestrian] bridge from the new parking lot up to the main gate of the Fort would be erected. Transport and wheelchair facility would be provided…. [T]here is no harm in shifting the parking lot, provided all the directions [of the chief minister] are implemented….— (Dec 6)
