Chrysanthemum show begins
PESHAWAR, Dec 6: The wife of Peshawar corps commander inaugurated the 41st Annual Chrysanthemum Show 2012 at the Garrison Park in Peshawar Cantonment on Thursday.
Accompanied by Corps Commander Lt-Gen Khalid Rabbani, she inaugurated the three-day exhibition which would continue till Dec 8.
Speaking on the occasion, Gen Rabbani said plants and flowers turned the environment beautiful, pollution-free and made the world a better place to live.
We expressed our aesthetic sense by taking part in such exhibitions, he said.
In the last one year, he said, the condition of roads in Peshawar Cantt had significantly improved due to hectic efforts by the cantonment board.
Gen Rabbani said it was our collective responsibility to plant maximum number of plants in open places, residential areas and in front of buildings to make it the city of flowers for which it was once famous. — APP
Two die on road
BATTAGRAM, Dec 6: Two men died in a road accident when the driver lost control over his vehicle and it fell into a deep ravine here on Thursday.
According to details, a Datsun pickup carrying poultry was on its way from Mansehra to Gilgit when the driver lost control and the vehicle plunged into a deep ravine that resulted in the death of the driver and helper on the spot. The bodies were later pulled out by police.
The deceased were identified as Khurshid Ahmed and Sadat, both residents of Mansehra. —APP
Fee concession
PESHAWAR, Dec 6: The Citizens’ Rights Protection Committee has expressed concern over non-implementation of an order of Peshawar High Court about fee discount in private educational institutions.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had also issued an order on July 30, 2012, directing the private educational institutions to follow a formula for charging concessional fee from brothers and sisters studying in the same institution.
“As per order of the high court and provincial government the owners of all private educational institutions are bound to give discount in fee,” said office-bearers of the committee while talking to media persons here on Thursday.
Former nazim of Karimpura union council Zakria Hussain and former mayor Saeed Ahmed Khan appealed to the chief justice of Peshawar High Court to take notice of the issue and order inquiry into the case to identify the officials supporting the private school owners in this case. —Bureau Report
Refinery in Kohat opposed
KARAK, Dec 6: The elders of tehsil Banda Daud Shah have strongly opposed the proposed construction of an oil refinery at Khushalgarh area of Kohat.
Talking to Dawn here on Thursday, the elders including Ishaq Khattak, Shahab and others claimed that the government had already completed the feasibility study for the establishment of an oil refinery at Krappa area of Karak.
They said that now the government had changed its mind and was planning to establish the oil refinery at Khushalgarh.
They claimed that Karak was the largest oil and gas producing district and establishment of a refinery was their rights.
They said that it would provide job opportunities to the locals and added that they would start a protest movement if the government shifted it to any other place. —Correspondent
PA body on taxation meets
PESHAWAR, Dec 6: A meeting of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly’s Standing Committee on Excise and Taxation was held here on Thursday at the assembly conference room with its chairman, MPA Mehmood Alam Khan, in the chair.
The meeting among others was attended by MPAs Abdul Akbar Khan, Mohammad Zamin Khan, Taj Mohammad Khan Tarand, Alamgeer Khan Khalil, Uzma Khan, Mehr Sultana, Shagufta Malik and Abdus Sattar Khan and secretary excise and taxation Sajid Jadoon and officials of concerned departments.
The meeting discussed various matters including unregistered vehicles in excise and taxation department, prosecution under Narcotics Act, action against unregistered vehicles in Kohistan district and recovery of property tax from private educational institutions.
On the occasion, the secretary excise briefed the participants regarding the legal position of unregistered vehicles in Kohistan and action taken against those involved in illegal activities. —APP
