KHAIRPUR, Jan 9: The local sugarcane growers have suspended sugarcane supply to sugar mills from Thursday till the mills pay the government rate.

The chairman of the Khairpur committee of the Sugarcane Growers Association, Fida Hussain Abbasi, speaking at a press conference, said that the growers had been asked to stop sugarcane supply to the mills.

He said that the grower would have to pay extra labour charges if sugarcane was not harvested in January, adding that there was a strong possibility that sugarcane may be dried.

He said that small farmers were hard pressed to pay government loans besides meeting other day-to-day expenses.

He said that the sugar mill owners were given a week to think about reconsidering their stance but now the growers were restrained from supplying them sugarcane, adding that the growers would cooperate with the action committee.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: A Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader, Ghulam Asghar Abbasi, a candidate for NA-211 (Naushahro Feroze) in the October elections, who is also a landlord, announced self-immolation in case the demands of sugarcane growers were not accepted by the sugar mill management by Saturday.

He announced this at a meeting of growers, which was held at the Abbasi House on Thursday.

It was decided that the growers would burn their sugarcane and block the National Highway in case the sugar mill management failed to pay the rate fixed by the government by Saturday.

The meeting was attended by Sohail Abbasi, Nazim Union Council Phul; Abdul Waheed Abbasi, Nazim Union Council Bhurti; Ahmed Nawaz Bhurt, Nazim Union Council Abran; Iftikhar Goraho, Naib Nazim Union Council Naushahro Feroze; and a member, Sindh Bar Council, Mohammad Abbasi.

GROWER BURNS SUGARCANE: A grower, Iftikhar Goraho, burnt his sugarcane crops standing on two acres near Mithiani on Thursday in protest against the rigid policy of the sugar mills management for not paying Rs43 per 40kg of sugarcane to the growers.

PROTEST: About 50 people staged a procession the other day to protest against drug menace in the town.
