HYDERABAD, Dec 4: Karachi emerged as champions of the 16th Sindh Games on Tuesday with a whopping 106 gold medals on a day Hyderabad’s high-jumper Mohammad Hasil set a new Games record.

Karachi’s gold medal tally was more than three times of that won by second-placed Hyderabad which finished with 35. Sukkur secured third position with nine golds.

The Games closed with a colourful ceremony in which Karachi received the trophy as the overall winners of the provincial event from Dr Mohammad Ali Shah where he announced that the next edition of the Games will be held in Larkana.

Karachi’s female athlete Razia Sher Khan eclipsed the seven-gold performance of swimmer Saad Amin the other day as she won eight golds to cap off a spectacular day on which she also received the best female athlete. Saad, meanwhile, won the best male athlete award.

But the day’s highlight was Hasil’s high-jump record.

Hasil jumped 6 feet 4 inches to break the pervious record by 2 inches set at the Sindh Games in Larakana three years ago as Hyderabad secured a 1-2 finish in the event as Mohammad Junaid secured silver.

Razia, meanwhile, lit up the track, dominating in each event she took part in and displaying her diverse athletic skills.

She clocked 14.30 seconds to take the 100m event in a 1-1 finish for Karachi with Ghazala Khan finishing second before leading another 1-2 for Karachi in the 200m, ending the race in 29.83s ahead of team-mate Sadia Basheer.

Razia also stormed to victory in the 400m before leading Karachi’s relay team to victories in the 4x100m and 4x400m races.

She then won the long jump (4.02m), high jump (4.7m) and the triple jump (8.96m) to finish with eight golds and a cash award of Rs 10,000.

Meanwhile, Vernin Uchong of Karachi won both the men’s 100m and 200m, clocking 11.78 and 22.67 respectively while his team-mate Shakeel also did a double, taking the honours in the triple Jump (12.84m) and long jump (6.29m).

There was a gold double for Hyderabad’s Hina Rafiq and Shafiullah as well.

Hina won the women’s javelin throw and discus throw events while Shafiullah triumphed in the men’s discus throw and hammer throw events.
