KARACHI, Nov 29: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has criticised a recent Supreme Court observation that cited ‘political monopoly’ of Karachi, terming it unconstitutional, undemocratic and reflective of ‘anti-Karachi’ sentiments.

He also rejected the idea of delimitation of constituencies in Karachi and demanded that President Asif Ali Zardari, the federation and Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry take action against ‘biased judges’ of the apex court.

“During hearing regarding implementation of the apex court’s order in the suo motu case related to law and order in Karachi one of the judges observed that Karachi was under political monopoly,” Mr Hussain said while addressing MQM legislators, senior lawyers and members of different wings of the party at its headquarters Nine Zero.

“The observation is unconstitutional, undemocratic, biased and reflective of anti-Karachi sentiments. The bench under chief justice observed that delimitation of constituencies should be carried out under the defined law but the fresh remarks by one of the judges violate Section 9 of the Delimitation of Constituencies Act of 1974 which never used the word monopoly.”

None of the courts across the world, he said, had ever come up with such ‘strange and biased’ remarks. He said no court in the world enjoyed the privilege that could lead to such remarks.

“This is not the job of any court but solely the right of people to choose any party for their mandate. No one is authorised to rob them of such rights. Such remarks to deprive people of their right are a dictatorial act,” he added.

He questioned the Supreme Court’s remarks made only for Karachi, saying if the ruling was accepted then why such a theme was not implemented in other parts of the country for delimitation of constituencies to remove political monopoly.
