NOAM Chomsky, prominent American philosopher and public critic, has rightly described Gaza as the world’s largest open-air prison.

The recent attacks by Israel were as inhumane and unlawful as is the treatment of prisoners in the worst jails like Guantanamo Bay.

These attacks were an open violation of human rights and international law. Which provision of the international law allows such hostility?

The silence of the so-called champions of human rights and international law, the US and the UN, is conspicuous. The UN is again proving itself as a rubber-stamp organisation in the hands of powerful countries.

So is the case of toothless OIC which acclaims itself as a representative body of 56 Islamic states. We are still waiting for even a verbal protest on the part of the OIC. That is the maximum one can expect of the OIC.

OIC’s role THE attacks by Israel on Gaza were terrorism in which a number of innocent children were martyred and thousands of adult wounded. Now the world can see the real face of Israel.

In this situation, American support for Israel is deplorable. Where are the United Nations and the OIC? Muslims are protesting this violence but their leaders are silent.

HAMSHIRA KHALID Karachi

Silence A LARGE number of people died in the recent brutal strikes by Israel against the hapless people of Gaza, but no voice was raised by the world community in support of Palestine which is being crushed so heartlessly.

The question is: where are all the human rights organisations? Are they just the instruments used by big powers?

Didn’t they see the brutality of Israel? The UN Security Council did not waste time in assembling against Syria and Libya, but it failed to condemn the Israeli aggression.

More importantly, despite being an Islamic organisation, the role of the OIC is disappointing as it has not come up with a clear-cut stance on the Palestine issue.

Will the Muslim nations wake up from their deep slumber to stop Israel from commiting brutal acts against the Palestinians in future?
