TAXILA, Nov 20: Public transporters blocked Rawalpindi-Peshawar G.T. Road at Taxila Chowk against the traffic wardens for issuing them tickets for violation of the official fare list.

The transporters have refused to reduce fares despite reduction in the prices of CNG by Rs31 per kg three weeks back.

The traffic wardens launched a crackdown against the owner of public transports and imposed fine on those violating the official fare list.

The transporters gathered at Taxila Chowk and suspended traffic on G.T. Road by parking their vehicles in the middle of the road.

They chanted slogans against the traffic wardens and demanded an end to the crackdown.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (rural), Sohail Nasir, reached the spot and after negotiating with the protesters restored the traffic.

The DSP told newsmen that the transporters were charging exorbitant fares from passengers on different routes despite reduction in CNG prices.

Mr Nasir said a passenger van charged Rs35 from Taxila to Rawalpindi whereas the official fare was Rs26.70. Similarly, Rs45 were charged from Wah Cantt to Rawalpindi against the officially fixed Rs32.93.
