ISLAMABAD, Nov 16: A special committee of the Senate sought on Friday detailed reports from the National Accountability Bureau and the Islamabad police on raids conducted at the residence of Leader of the House in Senate, Jehangir Badar, on Oct 8 to arrest Tauqir Sadiq, his relative and former chairman of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority. Mr Sadiq is wanted by police in connection with corruption case.
The committee formed to inquire into the incident met at the Parliament House with an agenda to examine the issue of surveillance of the residence of the Leader of the House by some law-enforcement agencies.
“The committee directed NAB and Islamabad police to come up in the next meeting with complete details within 10 days so that the Senate body could come to a logical conclusion on the matter,” said the convener of the committee meeting, Senator Farhatullah Babar.
Media reports said that on the order of the Supreme Court, NAB and Punjab police teams had raided residences of Jehangir Badar in Islamabad and Lahore to arrest Tauqir Sadiq for his alleged involvement in the Rs45billion scam, but they failed to arrest him.
A NAB official had said that a joint team of NAB and the Punjab police raided some places in Islamabad, including the Punjab House, to arrest the accused, but in vain.
Raids at the residence of Mr Badar were condemned by both the ruling party and opposition leaders, including Ishaq Dar of PML-N and Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi of JUI-F.
Farahtullah Babar said the interior ministry had denied that FIA had conducted the raid and similarly NAB’s director general of operations told the meeting that his organisation was not involved in the matter.
