TORONTO: Border services officers at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport have seized a massive amount of heroin smuggled inside a box on a flight from Pakistan.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says its officers first noticed the "suspicious" box offloaded from a flight from Pakistan on Oct. 30. Upon examination, the officers noted that the box showed visible tampering.

In the box, officers found two backpacks filled with numerous yellow-coloured bags of the drug.

The box was opened and officers seized solid packets of approximately 22 kilograms of heroin with an estimated value of almost $9 million.

It was not clear where in Pakistan the box came from nor where it was destined for in Canada.

No arrests have been made and police say they do not have any suspects. The drugs were turned over to the Peel Regional Police for further investigation.

In 2012, CBSA officers in Greater Toronto region's airports, postal and cargo processing facilities have seized over 106 kilograms of suspected heroin with an estimated value of over $42 million.
