LAHORE, Oct 18: The Islami Jamiat Tulaba and Baloch students clashed at the Punjab University Hostel No 1 on Wednesday night, leaving many injured. The varsity administration remained aloof.

It is learnt that some assailants attacked various rooms in Hostel No 1 of the Punjab University and injured several students, some of them IJT activists. The injured students were shifted to the Jinnah Hospital for medical aid.

PU IJT Nazim Rai Haq Nawaz told newsmen that the IJT activists and innocent students had been attacked in connivance with the university administration. He alleged that the assailants were accompanied by Resident Officer Javed Sami, Hall Council chairman Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Chief Security Officer Zubair Butt and the varsity guards.

“The attack is the worst example of vice chancellor’s dictatorship in the university,” he alleged. He said the VC and his close aides were party to the murder of IJT leader Awais Aqeel.

The IJT nazim also castigated the Punjab government for being indifferent to lawlessness in the university.

The IJT on Thursday staged a protest rally against brutal attack on its activists and students on Wahdat Road. The rally led by IJT Lahore Nazim Mudassar Ahmad Shah condemned the attack.

The protesters demanded that the governor and the chief minister take notice of extremist activities in the university and get a case registered and the assailants as well as their instigators arrested.

Meanwhile, the PU spokesman narrated an altogether different story, stating that the IJT activists on Tuesday night attacked Estate Officer Zubair Butt. He said some Pashtun students had organised a tea party to welcome the newly-admitted Baloch students at Hostel No 4 at 11pm. Suddenly, he said, some IJT hooligans appeared on the scene and asked the canteen owner not to serve them tea. They also threw the tables and other luggage that led to a scuffle.

Later, he claimed, the IJT activists left the scene threatening the students.

The Baloch students blocked Campus bridge and protested against the IJT activists. The PU spokesman told media persons that the Baloch students were saying that they would not return to their hostels as they fear that armed IJT activists would kill them.

The spokesman added the IJT activists had detained two of the Baloch students in Hostel No 9.
