KARACHI: Ten people — among them an FC constable, two police officials, a Pakistan Qaumi Razakar volunteer and a PPP activist — fell prey to targeted attacks mostly by motorcycle-riding assailants in different areas of the city on Thursday.

At least five other people who were associates of the deceased or were at the wrong place at the wrong time suffered injuries while a PPP activist who was injured in a targeted attack on Sept 26 died at a private hospital.

The FC constable and his friend were gunned down by armed men in Qasba Colony, Orangi Town within the remit of the Pirabad police station when they were having tea at a roadside eatery, said police.

The attackers walked up to the eatery and managed to flee after shooting, police said.

The wounded men were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the FC man identified as Abdul Malik, 25, was pronounced dead on arrival and the other victim, Nazeer Gul, died later during treatment.

Police said that Abdul Malik belonged to 73 Wing of the Frontier Constabulary and was posted at Kati Pahari. He lived in Banaras Colony.

Police suspected Nazeer Gul was an informer of the FC man but were not sure if the FC constable or the other guy was the target.

Two policemen shot dead

A police head constable and a Pakistan Qaumi Razakar volunteer were shot dead by four armed men riding two motorcycles in Sohrab Goth, raising the death toll of policemen killed in the city during the year to 69.

Police said the incident took place off the Superhighway near the Ahsanabad police kiosk when the policeman and the PQR volunteer were patrolling on a motorcycle. The attackers managed to flee.

Head constable Ali Hasan, 45, and volunteer Mohammad Akmal, 30, were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital but Hasan died on the way while Akmal succumbed to the wounds during treatment.

DSP Qamar Ahmed said that suspects were four in number and were riding two motorcycles.

They used 9mm pistol and three of them were wearing black shalwar kameez.

Police said the suspects wore long hair and had beards. Similar attacks had taken place in the area in the recent past. The policeman belonged to Khairpur and the PQR volunteer was a resident of Karachi.

Another policeman was killed and his colleague was wounded in an attack on a police kiosk in F.B Industrial Area by assailants late on Wednesday night.

According to police, constable Mahram Ali died on way to hospital while constable Haji Arshad was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

PPP activist gunned down

An activist of the Pakistan People’s Party was killed and his colleague suffered bullet wounded when assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on them near a roundabout in Orangi Town on Thursday.

Police said the incident took place in Sector 11-L near Hussain Chowk within the remit of the Mominabad police station.

PPP activist Mohammad Zeeshan, 28, and his friend Yousuf Younis, 25, suffered serious wounds in the attack and were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Zeeshan died before getting any help while his friend was admitted for treatment.

Police found several bullet casings of 9mm pistol at the crime scene. The victim lived in the same area, added police.

The president of PPP District Central, Sohail Abdi, confirmed at the hospital that Zeeshan and Yousuf were party workers and related to each other.

‘Police informer’ killed

A man believed to be a police informer was gunned down by motorcycle-riding attackers near a traffic intersection within the jurisdiction of the Rizvia police station in Nazimabad on Thursday.

Police said the bike riders tried to intercept a car but when the driver tried to speed away they chased him and opened fire. The driver suffered wounds in the neck and chest causing his instant death and the man sitting next to him survived with minor injuries.

Police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.

The victim was identified as Mohammad Arshad, 40, private driver of a DSP, and said to be working as an informer for police.

He lived in Hasrat Mohani Colony in Pak Colony and was father of four, police said.

Milkman found shot dead

A milkman was killed by assailants in the Pukhtunabad area of Manghopir on Thursday morning.

The victim identified as Shakawat Papu, 35, was found dead with gunshot wounds near his motorcycle fixed with milk cans which suggested he was distributing milk when attacked, police said.

The victim was a resident of Orangi Town No.4. Police shifted the body to Civil Hospital.

Wounded PPP man dies

PPP activist Owais aka Fazlu who suffered serious wounds in an attack by assailants on Sept 26 in Surjani Town sector 7A died during treatment at a private hospital on Thursday.

The victim was father of two, police said.

Wanted man killed

A man was killed by attackers when he was playing cards with a group at an eatery in the fisheries area within the remit of the Docks police station Fisheries early on Thursday.

Police said the victim Abdul Kareem, 35, was wanted in three cases of robbery registered at the Docks police station and suspected that he might have been killed by his own associates over some dispute over booty.

He was a resident of Machhar Colony and father of two, said police.

The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

Meanwhile, a man was gunned down by motorcycle-riding attackers and another was wounded in old city area on Thursday.

“The incident took place in Bombay Bazaar where suspects targeted a man who was later identified as Shahbaz Memon, 40,” said ASP Usman Bajwa.

The victim was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi where he died during treatment, said the ASP.

The suspects managed to flee on their motorcycle while two cows meant for sacrifice on Eid also died in the firing, said police.

In another incident, Ghulam Mohammad, 50, suffered injuries when unknown armed men fired at him in Khajoor Bazaar on Thursday evening. The victim was taken to the Civil Hospital where he was admitted for treatment.

Police said that motive for both killings was not clear immediately.
