KARACHI, Dec 31: The administrative control of the Fishermen Cooperative Society (FCS), a non-government body for safeguarding the interests of fishermen, should not be given to political executives.

This suggestion was made here by the head of Mubarak village fishermen community, Mohammed Haroon, in a faxed message that he sent to various authorities on Tuesday.

He said during the early days, when the administration of the FCS was in the hands of non-political executives, the FCS enjoyed a good reputation.

At that time, he added, the salaries of the staff were paid through the interest generated from the deposits of the FCS alone.

Later, when political executives took over the administrative charge, the FCS took a nosedive, eventually resulting in an overdraft bill of Rs70 million. It caused deterioration in the working of the FCS.

However, the past three years saw improvement in the affairs of the FCS when its administrative control was given to a non-political executive.

He said since that time the FCS converted the overdraft into a 110 million surplus. As a result, the working of the FCS improved significantly.

It helped poor fishermen in the social sector by providing free uniforms, textbooks, computers and furniture to needy schools.
