ISLAMABAD, Sept 24: A former additional director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) committed suicide in his house here on Monday, police quoted his family as saying.

However, the police started an investigation into the death.

The family of Shaukat Ali Khan, 62, told the police that they heard the sound of a gunshot from his room on the second floor of the house and rushed there.

However, they found the door of the bathroom locked from inside and later broke into it and found him dead.

He had shot himself in the head by a short machinegun (SMG), the police quoted the family as saying.

The Golra police said, “Committing suicide with a SMG was strange and it rose suspicion.” Generally, those committing suicide with a rifle shoot themselves in the chest and the same is the case with a SMG,” the police said.

Though the family did not want any legal action, the police started an investigation to establish the fact and clear their doubts.

According to the police, the victim’s elder brother Shamsher Ali Khan, an ex-officer of the District Management Group (DMG) and secretary to former President Farooq Leghari, had also committed suicide in the same manner.

Mr Shaukat had also served as the deputy commandant Frontier Constabulary for five years and DIG Kohat, The body was taken to a private hospital but later the Golra police shifted it to Pims for legal formalities.

However, on the directive of a magistrate, the body was handed over to the family without an autopsy.

The police quoted the family as saying that the victim was a patient of depression and remained in distress for the last a couple of weeks.
