KARACHI, Sept 24: A suspected gangster was killed in a police encounter in the Shanti Nagar area on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team carried out a raid in Majeed Para in Shanti Nagar within the remit of the Aziz Bhatti police station, police said, adding that during the raid they faced stiff resistance and criminals fired at the raiding team.

During the crossfire one suspect, later identified as Abdul Shakoor alias Chakoor, suffered bullet wounds and was arrested.

He was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical centre where doctors declared him dead. His other accomplices, however, managed to escape, the police said.

Aziz Bhatti SHO Inspector Safdar Mashwani said that the deceased had a criminal record as he had been booked in three robbery cases.

He was a relative of a notorious drug peddler, Kalu Current.

The police claimed to have seized two AK-47 assault rifles, three TT pistols and as many hand-grenades from the hideout of the criminals.

The police also claimed to have rounded up 10 others suspects in the same area.
