Musharraf arrives in Karachi

KARACHI, Dec 28: President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s scheduled engagements in the city, who arrived in the metropolis on Saturday evening, have not been made public for security reasons.

However, it is learnt that the president, besides visiting and addressing troops, is likely to meet political leaders to muster support from different parliamentary groups in the National Assembly for Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali who will seek vote of confidence on Monday.

The president has summoned the National Assembly session at 11am. Mr Jamali is expected to join the president some time tomorrow, it is learnt.

The prime minister was elected Leader of the House with a simple majority of one vote as he had secured only 172 votes out of 342.

Another likely engagement of President Musharraf is to approve names for the Sindh cabinet to be announced after Dec 31. The formation of the cabinet is being delayed due to differences in the ruling coalition, particularly among members of the Grand National Alliance on allotment of portfolios.
