UMERKOT, Sept 14: A soldier whose body was retrieved from under tons of rock and snow in the Gayari sector of Siachen was buried in his native town, Samaro, with full military honours on Friday.

The remains of Mohammad Zaman Arain, an assistant nursing sepoy, who was among the 128 soldiers and 11 civilians buried alive in an avalanche in this sector on April 7, 2012.

Zaman was born on Feb 14, 1992 in Umerkot and joined the army medical corps on May 10, 2006. On April 19, 2011, he was posted in the Gayari Sector with the Sixth Northern Light Infantry (NLI) battalion.

His body was retrieved on Sept 9 but due to heavy snowfall and weather problem in Skardu, the shifting of the coffin was delayed for five days. It took 155 days to recover his body.

The first body was recovered on April 28. So far, 81 bodies have been retrieved.

A large number of people, including Zaman’s relatives, local residents, besides army personnel, attended his funeral prayers after a guard of honour was presented to the late soldier.

Zaman had married one-and-a-half years back.

His father, Mohammad Aslam, and mother, Salma Bibi, felt proud over his martyrdom in the line of duty.

Lt-Col Nazar Hussain laid a wreath on his grave on behalf of the chief of army staff.
