Woman, daughter killed

MUZAFFARABAD, Sept 11: A woman and her daughter were killed and around 20 others, including a newly wedded couple, were injured after a van plunged into a ditch near here on Tuesday.

Police said the victims were members of a wedding party (baraat) which was returning to Chinari village in Jhelum valley from Gujranwala. The accident was alleged to have occurred due to negligence of driver.

The deceased were identified as Arsh Noor and her one and a half year old daughter Maahnoor. The groom his bride and three children were among the injured persons. They were however out of danger.— Staff Correspondent

Motorcyclist dies

TAXILA, Sept 11: A speeding trailer killed a motorcyclist and injured his companion here on GT road in limits of Wah Saddar police station on Monday.

Mohammad Ilyas reported to police that Hamza Nazeer and Mohammad Ihtasham were going on a motorcycle when the trailer hit them killing Hamza Nazeer on the spot and injuring Mohammad Ihtasham. —Correspondent

Accident claims life

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle in capital’s rural area on Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place at Tarnol crossing where a truck hit Mohammad Arshad, 20 who was crossing the road.

The vehicle driver escaped from the scene leaving behind the injured on the road. Later the injured was shifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead. — Staff Reporter

Nephew murders uncle

ATTOCK, Sept 11: A man was killed by his nephew over a minor family dispute in Hazro, police said on Tuesday.

Adnan Khan, a resident of Peshawar, reported to the police that his brother Ayza Khan, an ice-cream seller, was allegedly attacked by his nephew Mohammad Anwar with the help of a relative Shahab Khan at his house on Monday evening. He said his brother died on the spot and the accused escaped. — Correspondent

Suicide probe

GUJAR KHAN, Sept 11: The station house officer (SHO) Mandra, Malik Asif has been suspended by the city police officer Rawalpindi, while a judicial enquiry will be conducted to probe the ‘suicidal death’ of Mir Dad, who according to the police had attempted to inflict injury upon himself on Sunday.

According to police sources a judicial enquiry will be held to determine the extent of guilt of the policemen involved. The services of SHO Malik Asif has been suspended, while the moharar of police station Mandra has already been arrested and sent on judicial remand.

Meanwhile, ASI Muhammad Fiaz, and his accomplices Ehtisham and Adnan — constables — are still hiding since they had left the body of Mir Dad in holy family hospital (HFH) Rawalpindi on Sunday morning. A case had been registered against the four policemen on Sunday. —Correspondent

Scholarships doubled

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: China Foundation for Peace and Development (CFPD) has doubled its scholarships for Pakistani students from underprivileged families seeking technical and vocational training being carried out under the Waseela-e-Rozgar scheme of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

The visiting team comprising Xu Zhensui, Secretary General of CFPD and other officials including Tian Geng, Zhang Jing and Liu Chang announced this during a meeting with Federal Minister and Chairperson BISP, Farzana Raja at BISP secretariat on Tuesday.  — A Reporter
