QUETTA, Aug 26: A multi-storey building in the city’s Jinnah road area collapsed on Sunday morning.

The building, called ‘Swiss Shopping Plaza’ and located near the Quetta cantonment, collapsed between 4am and 5am after its foundations became weak because of seepage of water and sewage.

District administration officials, including the commissioner, inspected the site and ordered the evacuation of the offices of national and international media organisations, including the BBC and Al Jazeera, inside the building.  The supply of electricity and gas to the building was also disconnected.

The foundations of the plaza having offices of several trading companies and a private TV channel and newspaper grew weak when a sewage pipe was damaged during digging work for construction of another building. The sewage seeped into the foundation of the building.
