Top seeds advance

PESHAWAR, Dec 22: Top seed and Pakistan No. 1 Aqeel Khan and second seed Asim Shafiq, moved into the next round of the men’s singles on the fifth day of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Khyber Cup Open Tennis Championship played Sunday.

Aqeel Khan beat Shehzad Ahmad 6-2, 1-6 6-3 while Asim Shafiq overpowered Fayyaz Khan 6-1 6-4. National coach Rashid Malik also won his match against Shahid Khan 6-3 6-3. Shehzad Khan beat Inam Gul 6-1, 6-2.

In the doubles event, Irfanullah and Inam Gul won their match against Mahmood Khan and Shahid Khan 6-0, 3-6 and 0-3 while Asim Shafiq and Rashid Malik beat Fayyaz Khan and Israr Gul 2-6, 6-4 and 6-4. Mahmood Khan and Shahid Khan defeated Kamran Khalil and Ghulam Rasool by 6-3 and 6-7.

In the under-14 event, Mohammad Babar gained victory against Tanvir Munir defeating him 6-4, 5-7 5-7.

In veterans doubles Gul Hamid and Khyal Gul outclassed Samad Khan and Samin Jan Babar 6-3 6-4. Similarly, in veterans singles event, Rahat Khan defeated Gul Hamid 6-3 6-4. Rahat Khan also got victory against Khyal Gul by the same score of 6-3 and 6-4.
