MOSCOW: The Russian Orthodox Church on Friday urged the authorities to show “mercy” to three members of a feminist punk band who were sentenced to prison for performing an anti-Kremlin protest in a top cathedral.
“Without doubting the legitimacy of the court ruling, we ask the state authorities to show mercy within the frameworks of the law,” the Church’s highest council said in a statement quoted by the state RIA Novosti news agency.—AFP
