PAKISTAN today observes, along with the world, the UN International Youth Day to recognise the contributions of the youth to a global society.

As 60 per cent of the population here comprises the youth, it is hoped that the day would be observed with great enthusiasm.

The International Youth Day was first observed in 2000. The UN defines youth as the age - group between 15 and 24 years, forming one - sixth of the population of the world. The aim of International Youth Day is to endorse consciousness, particularly in the youth.

Nevertheless, the best way to curb unemployment is to develop various skills in youths. Our youths should not depend on the government to provide them jobs, as it is impossible for the latter to provide jobs to everybody at the same time.

The Sindh government’s effort to equip youths with skills through the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development Programme is a good initiative. It has provided training to more than 137,000 youths. Youths between the ages of 18 and 35 have been getting training at various levels in different disciplines. Besides, a stipend is also paid to all of them. After being trained, they are bound to get jobs on their own or start their own business.

Sindh is the economic hub of Pakistan, and thus it contributes a large share towards the country's economic development. Now trained youths will enhance its economy.
