KARACHI, Dec 21: Sindh home department has formed prison committees for all the districts, each headed by district Naib Nazim, whose main responsibility will be to supervise and inspect prisons, darul amaan and judicial lockups.

The EDO (community development) will be the secretary of each committee with jail superintendent, president district bar council, one retired judge of the high court, a renowned male social worker from NGOs working for prisoners’ welfare, a lady social worker and local industrialists as its members.

The committees will coordinate with NGOs working for the welfare of the prisoners in the area, will act as a bridge between prison authorities and other government departments.

It will also plan, undertake and supervise development activities, evolve an efficient system of receiving and hearing complaints, hold inquiries and suggest appropriate actions to the competent authority.

The committees can take any other welfare activity with the approval of the home department.—PPI
