DADU, July 23: A police team from Thatta recorded on Monday statements of police officials and witnesses in Sehwan to ascertain the cause of death of Sindh United Party (SUP) activist Taj Mohammad Solangi.

The deceased is suspected of having died because of police torture by Bhan Syedabad police who threw his body in a sugarcane field.

DIG Hyderabad Sanaullah Abbasi constituted an inquiry team headed by Thatta SSP Usman Ghani after protests were held in Sehwan Bhan Syedabad and Jhangara.

The SSP recorded the statements of ASP Sehwan Sajid Amir, three officials of Bhan Syedabad grid station and SUP Chairman Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah.

He also sought from Sehwan taluka hospital the interim medical report of the deceased.

On Sunday Thatta DSP Zawar Hussain and Inspector Wajid Ali Thahim recorded the statements of four relatives including Mr Solangi’s son Sajan, cousin Ghulam Shabbir, uncle Imdad and brother-in-law Hafiz Sikandar.

According to Sajan, his father was going to Dadu on a motorbike when a police team led by SHO Mohammad Ali Lashari of Bhan Syedabad and SHO Sarwar Rahoopoto of Sehwan arrested him on false charge of attacking a grid station.

Later, he alleged police killed him and threw the body in a sugarcane field.

Members of the inquiry team also recorded the statements of arrested police personnel SHO Mohammad Ali Solangi, head constable Mohammad Usman and constables Aijaz and Mohammad Shabbir Usman Ghani has also collected the criminal record of Taj Mohammad and the statements of his relatives and refused to divulge details. PML-N leader Liaquat Ali Jatoi and acting chairman of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz Dr Niaz Kalani visited the residence of the deceased in Bhan Syedabad and offered condolence to his brother and son.
