MITHI, July 20: Five poachers killed an antelope of a rare and endangered species near Okraro village of Mithi taluka on Thursday.
The poachers, said to be from Goga Veri village, chased the antelope and shot it dead.
A team of wildlife department, including honorary district game warden Lajpat Sharma and assistant conservator Ashfaq Memon, visited the area on Friday and recorded statements of villagers.
A case against the five accused — Nanji, Togo, Chatu, Lilo and Versin — was registered. They said in their statements that they had mistaken the antelope for a deer.
Despite a ban on hunting of rare animals in Tharparkar, poaching continues. Two antelopes were hunted in the Nagarparkar area last week.
ACCIDENT: A judge and his two sons were injured when their car was hit by a truck on Mithi-Naokot road near Vijuto on Friday.
